As
the old (and rather crude) phrase goes, there's more than a single
way to skin a cat. While becoming skilled at Japanese is no
exception, there are superior ways and not so adequate medium to go
about it. The old fashioned way to become acquainted with the
Japanese language is to start off with a small intro into the accent,
learn a few greetings as well as phrases, then just when it looks to
be getting fun, you were hit over the head with the linguistics
hammer and dragged through countless hours of sentence making, verb
structure, making use of of particles etc, etc. Not only does it
sucks all the pleasure out of learning the Japanese language, it is
actually the wrong medium to go about it. When you start learning
your mother tongue at the age of approximately one or so, how many of
your mother father whipped out a text book and then started teaching
you the conjugating verbs? I believe that you learned by observation.
By seeing and listening and ultimately repeating what you heard
everyone saying. Learning Japanese must be no different.
Nevertheless, there are many other ways to submerge yourself into the
verbal communication without in reality having to go there. They
contain: Taking an online or classroom channel.
Chatting
with Japanese friends.
Reading
Japanese books or manga.
Watching
Japanese TV shows or movies.
Listening
to Japanese music or Radio.
I
would say the most excellent way to learn Japanese with bare minimum
cost plus maximum speed will be to join an online course with a
couple (or all) of the various other methods. This is where people's
choice of cat skinning comes in to play. I know quite a few people
who learned Japanese simply through listening to Japanese Music on
Japanese mini LP CD, and get to a level that they could start
having a sensible conversation at.
